But since Apple is already allowing you to switch with just a tap on control center, I can’t imagine that the overhead is so large that you could tie it to an ambient light sensor.

I suppose there’s a theoretical risk that you’d get some flickering if the room happened to be at exactly the threshold brightness. (But again, that hasn’t proven to be a problem with existing apps that do this already).
